@purascans: The reason some floss glides so smoothly between your teeth is a coating of Teflon — the same nonstick chemistry as a frying pan. Slick "glide" floss is coated in PTFE, a fluoropolymer in the PFAS family — the "forever chemicals." A 2019 study by the Silent Spring Institute found people who flossed with Oral-B Glide had higher levels of PFAS in their blood than those who didn't. Oral-B says it has since reformulated Glide, but independent lab testing still finds PFAS in roughly a third of flosses on shelves. Here's why it's there: floss is just a thread of nylon that drags and shreds on its own, so to make it slide, it's coated in PTFE — a plastic built from fluorine, bonded so tightly that nothing in nature can break it down. The problem is that coating doesn't stay on the string. Every time you snap it between your teeth, tiny flecks scrape off into your mouth — one of the most absorbent places in your body — and because PFAS never breaks down, whatever your body takes in just builds up over the years. The fix is simple: switch to a PFAS-free floss like Cocofloss, or a plain silk floss coated in plant wax. Scanned With The Pura App
