The ER is the worst offenders for over ordering CT scans & honestly they kind of have to with sue happy people. I’ve been a CT tech for 24yrs. We get CT orders daily for dumb stuff that could be seen on plain film X-rays with 100x less dose. But people come in & basically demand CT’s. Plus providers have become so heavily dependent on radiology in general they have forgotten how to actually clinically access patients! Look at your lab work! Actually put hands on patients before you start ordering CT’s! It’s gotten ridiculous honestly.

I had a tiny lump near my nipple and I asked for an ultrasound and they wouldn’t do it. They forced me to have a mammogram! And then I had an ultrasound! Why didn’t they just do the ultrasound from the start???!

I’ve switched to Her Scan ultrasounds. It costs me around 300 because insurance will only cover mammograms. It’s worth it to me. They can scan all the way up into air pits and surrounding tissues that mammograms do not cover.

Once again, being poor has probably saved my life… no insurance for the first 25 years of marriage we didn’t go to doctors because there was nothing wrong. Both sides of our families did the whole doctor thing and they are on all types of medication…

Platforming this sort of scaremongering bullshit for clicks is unforgivable. The benefits of a scan when a medical professional decides it is necessary far outweigh the downsides.

I insisted on ultrasound because of dense tissue. I was lectured for 10 minutes by tech that I should have a mammogram because there is one very rare cancer that only a mammogram catch. I said that’s ok, just do the ultrasound!

Cancer guy here. What should I have done? Just die? As of now, all they’re giving us what we have. So according to this guy, you have two choices. TRY and stay alive or just give up. This guys opinions are dangerous.

I work in radiology - the real conversation should be aimed towards doctors and their performance. OF COURSE they’re going to over order exams… because the name of the game is CYA!!!! In a perfect world, doctors wouldn’t be overworked and would have time to listen, examine, and treat accordingly but that’s not how the model is run. It’s all protocols - if you say xyz, they’re going to order abc, etc

I had a patient who found out she had cancer when she went to get her mammogram. It was a microcalcification by her chest wall. If she didn't go for that exam she would have never known and the outcome would not have been good. She had that area removed and she's living a great life.
