@stephanne221: This has been such an interesting trend to observe! I’m noticing how it is: - influencing the way people metabolize their emotions - either ignore or prioritize unmet needs - influence the depth and frequency of connection with others. Curious as to what you think for yourself or have seen in others! 👀 #attachmenttheory #relationships #emotionalintelligence #socialexperiment #communication

I feel like complaining is a form of sharing, like, square and a rectangle thing. When you’re complaining you’re sharing your annoyance, anger, frustration, etc

Easy. When she does it, she calls it “sharing”, and when I do it, she calls it “complaining”. 🤣

I try to thread the line and kvetch, I am complaining but I’m also dramatic and want to entertain so I share my complaints in ways that make people laugh instead of in a way that makes them feel like they have to Do Something About It

I tell my husband “it’s okay if you use xyz today but can you make sure to buy a new one for yourself this weekend” and he thinks I’m complaining. To me, this is reasonably setting a boundary.

For me it's about the repetitive subject being discussed. The first few times I can attribute it to venting, after that it goes into the complaining category.

Do you see a difference more along the lines of anxious v. avoidant? My thought would be people who lean anxious see sharing more innocuously, people who lean avoidant are more likely to feel sharing is complaining.

Mostly anything a woman says is considered complaining by the men. So there’s that.

I think complaining has an aspect of inconvenience where the person is trying to gain relief whereas sharing is telling a story for the sake of updating, connection or praise

IMO it's the goal. Are we venting, or are we processing?

Complaining is repeated over and over of the same issue, sharing/venting is exactly that: once you’ve let enough steam out, it gone

When I was pregnant, I always said to my husband, “I’m not complaining, I’m just reporting the facts.“ That was nearly 30 years ago and we still use that line when we are sharing things that are bothering us.

Never thought of this before, I rarely use 'complaining' as a description for behavior in any relationship. Because repeatedly sharing or asking for something tells me their need is not met and its important for someone, I dont see that as complaining per se. But when I do, its because they want/ask someone else to change, but theres no willingness to reflect on or change their behavior themselves. I think its [complaining] = [repeatedly sharing] + [repeatedly no willingness to change or even reflect on your own behavior]. There are a lot more specific situations which I can think of, but they all come back to this persistent unwillingness to look at and change themselves.
