Meet the people who knew indie rock icon Jason Molina best before the world did. Family, friends, original 🎵 Songs: Ohia bandmates and collaborators share the origins of the man who became a legend. Those who stood closest to him in his formative years share intimate interviews, early photos, oddball humor, archival footage, music, and frenetic animations. This documentary paints a portrait of Jason Molina’s birth through 1998 – Five years before the Magnolia Electric Co. album set indie rock on fire - including Jason’s siblings, and friends from early childhood, high school, and college, and early musical collaborators. 🎸 Featuring: Unseen childhood photos Spineriders VHS footage and art Archival video of Songs: Ohia performances Interviews with family, friends, and bandmates Art by Jason Molina 🔸 Meet the Cast: Ashley Molina – The youngest of 3 Molina children is energetic, hilarious, and shines in every scene. This film could not happen without her. Aaron Molina – No one knew Jason better than Jason’s younger brother. He is a master storyteller, in true Molina tradition. Billy Molina – Mr. Molina passed away just 2 days after pre-production began in 2021. He joins us through footage of Jason’s induction to the Lorain City Schools Hall of Fame induction video. Jennifer Koury – And Jason met at Lorain High pre-school as 3 year old children and they remained friends for life. Carl Raponi – Met Jason , age 5?, at Oberlin Day Camp. They re-met when J was buying his bullet bass at Ron Zehel guitar center. Todd Jacops – Was with Carl that day. The three of them formed the metal band Chronic Insanity in Lorain, along with front man, Dave Williams Mike McCartney – Influenced the metals heads to turn punk. Mike fronted The Spineriders with Jason on bass, Todd on guitar, and Carl on drums. Geof Comings – An Oberlin townie, met Jason at the Feve in Oberlin. Geof was an early Songs: Ohio member (drummer) who played with Jason the longest. Bruce Comings – Geof’s brother was an early Songs: Ohia collaborator and played guitar on the 1998 Tour. Max Winter – A college confidant and collaborator, the most eloquent raconteur of the whole bunch, and 1998 bass player. Reilly Lambert – A Lorain, Ohio metal kid played in bands along side Spineriders, and remained friends with Jason for life. Millicent Souris – Was friends with Jason from Oberlin College through the end. Her touching and humorous takes on Jason and the Oberlin years are simply priceless. William Schaff – Met J by passing his art on to him through a friend in 1997. The two shared a lasting friendship and fruitful collaboration that somehow magically continues today. Jason Lawhead – Lorain born comedian, now cracking up the West Coast, delivers wonderfully energetic takes on art and life in steel town Lorain’s 1980s. Kurt Hernon – Ohioan, music writer, owner of Speak of the Devil, and huge fan of Jason’s enhances the film with his generosity and presence. Tommy Nickoloff – Met Jason on an Admiral King High School soccer field in 1998, They remained in contact for another 15 years.
