The guys who invented or at least popularized vapes did so because it was a better option than smoking, but instead of moving the smokers over from cigarettes to vapes, they created this whole new demographic who wouldn’t smoke but was ok with vaping.

The poppy-farming incentive reminds me of the amnesty payments for CFC’s, ended up creating a whole industry of making CFC’s for electronics manufacturers to cash in for “ceasing to use” in their appliances

Plastic bags are not worse.. and the bans make zero sense. Meanwhile paper bags are back which funds and promotes horrendous deforestation and are much worse for the environment in the grand scale, than plastic bags are. Paper bags cost more fuel (to burn) to be transported, they can’t be composted because most compost facilities can’t compost cardboard or paper, they can’t be recycled because there is no market for it, and they are easily contaminated, and they can’t be reused because they break. So they end up in a landfill WHERE they breakdown.. good right? Hold on there! They break down and create methane which bad, which is why trash companies want organics out of the landfill because methane is a horrible greenhouse gas. And oh don’t forget the trees being grown and cut down constantly by gas powered tools and equipment to create the bag, as opposed to using the byproducts of oil to create plastic which is generally inert and easily compressible in a landfill, and won’t break down into toxic methane gas, and can easily be managed as it slowly breaks down. And oh yeah the plastic bag is totally the issue but not the insane amount of plastic wrap that pallets come delivered in… or the plastic milk bottles, or the plastic cereal bags, or the plastic sandwhich bags, or plastic trash bags… and oh yeah don’t forget! Most people reused plastic grocery bags AS TRASH BAGS which actually cut down on the plastic waste since they didn’t need to go out and buy a bag whose specific purpose was to hold trash.

Cobra farming in india is a famous example of this. British colonizers tried to solve the problem of cobras in the wild killing people by offering payments for dead cobras. People just bred them in captivity.

the British government has done that before. in British colonial India, they had a cobra bounty to reduce the number of snakes.... people just bred the snakes. (there's also historical reports of the same thing in England with badgers but I can't find a decent source)
