It really might be… but if you plan to go, promise to practice leave no trace— stay on trail, pack out your trash, and give wildlife plenty of space. Also always be careful when swimming in mountain streams. Know your limits and check that your jump spots are clear before sending it. Be cautious of unseen currents, under water debris (we typically pack goggles and swim down before jumping if we can’t see to the bottom), and always keep an eye on weather as flash floods can change waterways in a matter of seconds. Tips + logistics for planning— 📍Situated in the southwest corner of Virginia within Jefferson National Forest is Devils Bathtub. This natural pool was carved by the rushing waters of Devils Fork Creek that have been said to be “cold enough to squelch the fires of hell.” So needless to say, it’s the perfect spot to cool off on a hot summer day. 🥾 The trail is 4 miles out and back, and you’ll gain 600ft of elevation throughout the hike. 💦 There are multiple stream crossings along the way and plenty of swimming holes as you get closer to “the tub,” so you can find your own spot and cool off as you go. 🚘 Parking at the trailhead is limited and the road back to the closest lot is a little rough (4x4 is not *needed* but recommended). There is ample parking at Scott County Park too, if the trailhead is full or you can’t make it up the road. Parking there adds about an extra mile to the hike. 🐍 We ran into quite a few snakes (most harmless), and our final encounter was a copperhead, so be on the lookout!
