@brainswithhoney: How do neurons actually talk to each other? 🧠⚡️ Your brain contains billions of neurons, constantly sending information around… but how does one neuron actually communicate with another? Think of it like a relay race 🏃‍♀️: ⚡️ Neuron 1 receives information from other neurons or sensory receptors. ➡️ The signal travels along the neuron as an electrical impulse. 🔄 When it reaches the end of the neuron, the message is passed across the tiny gap between neurons: the synapse. 📨 Chemical messengers called neurotransmitters carry the message across this gap. 🧠 Neuron 2 receives the message, and depending on the neurotransmitter and receptors involved, it can either make that neuron more likely or less likely to fire. ➡️ If the signal is strong enough, the message continues through the next neuron. And this happens constantly, across enormous networks of neurons, allowing your brain and nervous system to process information, control movement, store memories, regulate emotions and respond to the world around you. So rather than thinking of neurons as isolated cells, think of the brain as an enormous communication network with neurons constantly passing messages from one cell to the next. 🧠💬 Save this if synapses have ever looked more complicated than they actually are. What neuroscience topic should I simplify next? 👀 #Neuroscience #Neurons #Synapses #Neurobiology #BrainScience
