It is a centuries-old artistic tradition deeply connected to the Arabic language and Islamic civilization. Over generations, calligraphers developed the Arabic script into an art known for harmony, precision, balance, and beauty. The art has also played an important role in Islamic culture, appearing in Qur’anic manuscripts, mosques, architecture, woodwork, metalwork, and other forms of artistic expression. Traditional calligraphers often use a qalam, a specially prepared reed or bamboo pen, to carefully shape each letter. In recognition of its cultural importance, Arabic calligraphy was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021, following a joint nomination by 16 countries, including Saudi Arabia.
