@childocdtherapist: When OCD decides a person is contaminated, it can put the entire family in an incredibly difficult position. It makes sense that parents want to reduce their child’s distress. So often families start accommodating OCD to keep the peace. The problem is that the relief is usually temporary. Each time life gets rearranged around OCD, OCD learns that the trigger really did need to be avoided. Before long, the rules can get bigger and the entire family can find themselves living around OCD. The better and more effective long-term approach is to give your child the skills to crush OCD and to not let the family get hijacked by OCD’s rules. 🎓 Want to learn how to understand your child’s OCD, recognize accommodations and coach them through OCD using evidence-based approaches? This has to be really hard on the person who has OCD but also hard on the "contaminated" family member who's being treated like a pariah

I know I'm an asshole cuz i would not be working my way around that. Giving into those compulsions validates them and makes it worse. Coming from someone with ocd.

As the “contaminated” sibling, I’m so glad I moved out. Not even for my brother or myself, but for my parents. They least of all deserved this

yeah, I'm the contaminated sibling. Yes it sucks and is incredibly hurtful. I bathe more than he or our mom, am well groomed, and have been treated like I'm disgusting for awhile. Honestly I just gave up

I would bet that 9 times out of 10 that sibling IS a problem but the parents don’t want to notice it. Poor hygiene, bullying behavior, or worse. OCD triggers don’t usually come out of nowhere. They usually come from trauma.

I have a cousin with OCD and one day her brother’s kids were over at their parents for Easter. One the kids who at the time was being potty trained had an accident and wet themselves but instead of informing someone they just got out of the arm chair they were in and moved to the couch. My cousin with OCD sat down in the chair finding it wet and smelling of pee. She jumped up upset and disgusted rightfully so and went to change. From then on she refused to have anything to do with the kid to the point where the kid is now a full adult with kids of her own and still my cousin refuses to interact with her because she thinks she still have an accident. When the now adult kid was pregnant her water broke in front of my cousin and instead of helping the her own niece she said she is disgusting and she knew she make a mess again. Now I understand she has OCD but she pushing it. The niece was 3 when it happen she is now 32.

Had a step brother who refused to bathe, shat on paper plate, pissed in water bottles and never washed his hands. I used hand sanitizer everytime I touched everything, freaked out about everything. I now have severe germ problems and issues with it.

Oh god that’s what that was/is. I always feel so guilty for not wanting to touch their things or hug them. I used to be so mean to a girl in elementary school who I thought was contaminated. I live with that regret everyday

When my step sister had mrsa I wouldn’t let her sit on the couch and begged them to make her stay at her mom’s house until it was gone. I constantly sanitized everything!!!
