If you look it up that's incorrect, British used both interchangeable and Webster decided to remove the U in all those words and Britain decided to use the U instead as standard, instead of having both interchangeable.
Just for some reason, the spelling got stuck forever from that moment on. Which makes English illogical sometimes with spoken English compared to written English
