When my 2015 Nissan Versa was totaled, I owed like 4K on a 10k loan, they paid off the balance I owed and gave me a check for the rest, which was about 5700 and I used that to get my new car 🥰 isn’t that the standard?

this is why you should spend the extra money for GAP. the monthly cost os usually like $5 a month. totally worth it.

Paying the car’s value is the only option that’s correct. If insurance was there to pay off the loan, then people who had equity would get screwed over. People who own it outright would get nothing. And if you think people who have equity get the value and people who are upside down get more, than that’s unfair to the people who have equity. This is the whole point of regulation.

I understand insurance companies pay based on the car’s value, not necessarily what you still owe. But I honestly think the system is unfair when the driver who gets totaled is not at fault. If I financed a car for 6 years and someone totals it within the first 2–3 years, why should I be left paying thousands of dollars on a loan for a car I no longer have because of someone else’s actions? If I caused the accident, then absolutely—that’s where GAP coverage makes sense. But when another driver is 100% responsible, their insurance should cover the difference between the car’s value and the remaining loan balance. The innocent person shouldn’t suffer the financial consequences of someone else’s mistake.

Honestly, that does suck for the other guy. Theres no way to soften a tough situation other than just delivering the truth.

It's so weird to me that a customer would be talking to the other person's insurance. What a crazy backwards system.
I got in an accident, called my insurance and gave them my name and policy number, the name and policy number of the guy who hit me, and a brief recount of the incident. They made me an appointment to drop off my car and pick up a rental the next day to have the damage appraised, and repair work completed, and I drove home. All done in less than 5 minutes. They called me back about 2 weeks later when the work was completed, and I picked up my car looking good as new. I received periodic text/email updates throughout the process. Completely painless experience.

I got a loan for a car back in 2017, someone hit me 27 days later. And the car was totaled out. If I didn’t have gap insurance I would’ve owed like $3,000. ALWAYS GET GAP INSURANCE.

the way I will never NOT get GAP. It saved my wallet when I was in a no fault multi vehicle accident caused by a drunk driver.

Who buys any kind of car and doesn’t carry gap insurance nowadays with car values all over the place and interest rates you would be absolutely stupid to pass up gap insurance.

This is why I always insure my car for more than what the loan has left. I’m guessing that’s not a thing in America though?

Always ALWAYS get GAP insurance!! I had a total loss on my barely a year old car, accident wasn’t my fault, and my car was absolutely depreciated because of what I bought, GAP covered probably about 8k that was not covered by the other parties insurance.

I thought if you get a car loan, you buy gap insurance along with the loan. It's a separate insurance from your regular car insurance?

This is why it’s so important to understand all of the implications of having negative equity on a car before you buy it. Even if you have GAP insurance, there is still a maximum limit it will pay out so you can still end up left owing cash out of pocket if there is too much negative equity.

I used to work as a records clerk at a credit union, I'll always suggest GAP!! I've had so many members not get it and end up being responsible for the remaining balance

I remember when my car got totalled too. The accident wasn’t my fault either. I cried over that car. That car was my baby. I still miss it. It was a workhorse. I have a “new” car now & I like it, but I still miss my old car.
