Decompress the Low Back and Improve Anterior Pelvic Tilt Not only is hanging great for shoulder mobility, it's also fantastic for decompressing the low back but… there is a catch, and this video will set you on the right track! Decompress the Low Back and Improve Anterior Pelvic Tilt Not only is hanging great for shoulder mobility, it's also fantastic for decompressing the low back but… there is a catch, and this video will set you on the right track! While true dead hangs have been beneficial for people with low back issues, oftentimes it can actually be more problematic — that's where this technique comes in. By putting your feet far out in front of you, not only are you lessening the load on the shoulders and body from the hang, but the angle of the hips actually helps alleviate the low back, making the decompression much more effective. Now the other thing to point out is you want to be paying attention to squeezing your stomach really tight; this will shift your pelvis into a "posterior" pelvic tilt and help offset the awful anterior tilt we all suffer from, a side effect of sitting all day. Excessive anterior tilt is often a massive contributor to low back pain, and any attempt we can make to move towards more posterior tilting of our pelvis can make serious strides in fixing this problem for good. Reinforcing the posterior tilt as often as you can will ultimately help correct your posture and improve the state of your low back. And this is even more effective when you are in a decompressed state like this. Not to mention, this generally just feels great — and the added hang time ain't bad for your shoulders either. All in all, this is a super gentle technique but teaches some pretty big lessons about controlling your pelvis from anterior to posterior tilt and definitely should be experimented with.
