When you're about to start breast radiation, it can feel like you're walking into it blindly. Your radiation team will usually recommend a lotion or cream to use… but that's often where the instructions end.

When you're about to start breast radiation, it can feel like you're walking into it blindly. Your radiation team will usually recommend a lotion or cream to use… but that's often where the instructions end. "Use this cream." Okay… but when do I put it on? How often? Right after treatment? When I get home? Morning? Night? How much should I use. Those were all the questions I had before my first treatment. So I wanted to share my personal routine in case it helps someone else feel a little more prepared. ☢️ Every treatment morning starts with a shower because my skin needs to be clean before radiation. I don't wear lotions, creams, deodorant, or powders to my appointment. ☢️ As soon as treatment is over, I head to the changing room and apply @Dermavitality Radiation Relief Cream. Then I change into an oversized T-shirt so nothing tight is rubbing against my skin. If I can, I skip the bra for the ride home to minimize irritation. ☢️ On the drive home, I keep a small cooler with a clean, damp washcloth or hand towel. The cool towel feels incredibly soothing over the treated area and has become one of my favorite little comforts after each session. ☢️ Once I'm home, I apply a generous layer of Aquaphor to keep my skin moisturized. I'm currently day 8 of 15, so this isn't me saying this will prevent radiation burns. Skin reactions often happen later in treatment or even after it's finished. This is simply the routine I've chosen to follow in hopes of taking the best care of my skin throughout radiation. I'm not a medical professional, and everyone's treatment plan is different, so always follow your own radiation team's recommendations. I just remember how overwhelming it felt walking into my first treatment with so many unanswered questions, and if seeing my routine helps even one person feel a little less lost, then sharing it is worth it.
