@neilmccahill: Phantom pain is one of the hardest things I’ve ever tried to explain. The limb is gone. The pain is VERY REAL. #phantompain #amputee #disability #chronicpain #painmanagement

Thank you so much for talking about the Phantom pain. No one ever does. It was so bad. I would stay up crying all night long praying forgot to take it away. He has calmed down a lot. It’s been since February. I had my surgery. It still happens once in a while, no one ever told me that I never knew what it was. God bless you.

Does phantom pain result from amputation itself or does that pain mimic what you felt before you lost your leg?

I get this too. Feels like a knife is stuck into my leg or foot. I look and there is no knife. Phantom knife syndrome. I do have a foot but it is just like that. I can see the spot where the knife is sticking in but nothing is there. I have had this all my life. In my case it is a form of migraine related to epilepsy. 😳

Gabapentin? We treated a cat with chronic pain after declaw surgery (amputation) with Gabapentin, an NSAID, and an opioid for a few weeks and it helped. I wonder if they do this in human medicine?

My husband had phantom pain too. It was heartbreaking to watch him go through it. Thankfully, he had a compassionate physician who managed his pain well. I’m so sorry. I hope you can find relief

I feel you! My worst phantom pain really subsided at around two and a half months after my amputation. Now only once in a while and it’s usually electrical shock ones. But have phantom sensation every day especially when I take my leg off.

I remember my mom getting those. I’d rub her foot where it ended. It didn’t help the pain but it gave her something else to focus on. Have you found similar?
