MOODBOARDS!! Dont use Pinterest cause I tried. Milanote is better! I used it and it gives u tabs and ways to plan and expand how u want to do ur character designs. Also alot of my designs root from fantasy and mythological elements, find a main theme, get refs from actual and already done similar ideas and then analyse from there. Then u can also choose designs ure inspired by and other elements u’d think look nice

it really just boils down to doing a lot of research and expanding your visual library; look for silhouettes in nature you find interesting and start from there! Gathering a lot of references for clothing, color palettes, and textures will also help a lot, although its not imperative that you fully rely on them! Heres an example of a sketch i made a while back😋

you got some other good tips already so here's what I do. I match my characters personality with the colours they have plus the clothes that they wear. Everything they have on them has a reason and a story behind it. Their environment, their job, the people they hang out with all influence these things. It also helps with the silhouette and the overall cohesiveness of the character. It also helps reduce overcrowding in a design. One last thing, even if you're not going to do so, thinking about whether your character would be in a game or an animation will change how you design your character big time. Animation designs tend to be simpler but with a handful of recognizable features while game design has more details but with more of a story behind it. I hope this gave u some inspo :))) feel free to ask me more if you want too :)))

They're unique until I put them in a story and realize that their cool clothes are not made for fighting and would actually slow them down 💔 (I hate scratching the uniqueness of my OCs for the sake of the plot)

moodboards, Pinterest is fine to use, because the main problem is always just ripping an outfit/character design element bar for bar. a better approach is simply mixing and matching elements from similar pieces, cross referencing and doing some inflections of who this character is going to be and how that will influence their style, what they wear, how they do their hair etc etc. Basically always have the actual CHARACTER in mind when doing so.
