@legend.of.history2: THE GREAT PYRAMID DIDN’T LOOK LIKE THIS — THIS IS WHAT ANCIENT EGYPTIANS SAW Imagine approaching Giza more than 4,500 years ago. The Great Pyramid would have looked completely different from the monument we know today. Completed around 2560 BC for Pharaoh Khufu, it originally stood approximately 146.6 meters high. But the rough blocks visible today were largely its internal core. The exterior was covered with finely dressed, pale limestone casing, much of it quarried at Tura. These stones created enormous smooth faces that would have appeared brilliantly bright beneath Egypt’s intense sunlight. Imagine sunrise over the Nile Valley. The landscape is still partly dark… Then the first sunlight strikes the pyramid. An immense geometric mountain of pale limestone begins glowing above the desert. For nearly 3,800 years, the Great Pyramid remained the tallest known human-made structure on Earth. But over the centuries, much of its smooth casing disappeared. Some stones were loosened by damage and earthquakes, while large quantities were later removed and reused as building material. Some original casing stones still survive around the pyramid’s base. And what about the famous golden cap? A pyramidion may once have crowned the summit, but there is no archaeological evidence proving that Khufu’s pyramid had a solid-gold or gold-covered capstone. The reality is spectacular enough. Ancient Egyptians built the Great Pyramid from roughly 2.3 million blocks and covered much of that enormous structure with a smooth limestone exterior. Ancient Giza wasn’t designed to look ancient. It was new. Bright. Alive.
