True crime dehumanizes literally everyone involved. It's really gross. The victims and families are just plot points in the sensationalized "true" story of the offender, who is often presented as the "protagonist", in a way that also scrubs out the reality of their lives as well. It misrepresents the reality of these violent crimes in a way that makes audiences suspicious of the wrong people, and therefore less likely to belive victims in their real lives since their stories don't match the fictionalized versions of the crimes they've read about. It's awful what happened to your friend, and these grifters (and they ARE grifters) use it to turn a profit. It's nauseating. I think true crime adjacent media can get it right sometimes (i.e. the Spotlight movie) but the majority of these podcasts and video essays are not that.

I hate Chris Hansen because it was only ever about views, and not offering real support to families looking for guidance on how to keep their kids safe; not using any kind of ethical approach to the investigations; not using methods that would hold up in court; not using tactics to hunt the bulk of predators that assault family or children close to them, in the name of fear mongering about the internet; and not about any sort of real justice for the people affected by predators.

i used to LOVE true crime, then my brother got arrested in our small town in 2021 and everyone and their mom came out of the woodwork talking about it. people thought I couldn't see them commenting on posts other people shared about it and then they'd come back to me saying they were there if I needed to talk. but I know it wasn't real empathy, they want details. it's a story and they want to be entertained. true crime strips the true feeling and emotions of people away, turns them into caricatures and then bring it up over and over and over for forever.

I hate true crime too, for a similar but different reason. My grandad used to be the top murder detective in my state and one of his last cases was so traumatic for not only him but everyone involved he ended up developing PTSD and had to retire. We were never allowed to wear frilly socks as kids because it would send him into a full blown episode. There’s multiple docos about this case, it’s somewhat famous in my country. The amount of people who would wander up to him and ask him the most disgusting questions, sometimes without even a hello. It’s like they forget they’re talking about a real murdered little girl, it’s all just a story to them. It’s entertainment. Like imagine walking up to a man who is on these docos actually saying “this case traumatised me and I had to retire” and saying something like “what was it like finding her body?” Without even a greeting? The most traumatic moment of not only grandads life, but that little girls entire families lives too. I hate true crime freaks so much.

It’s part of the alt right pipeline too, a lot of it encourages anti-social behavior that eventual justifies more police funding. And once you realize that most perpetrators of certain types of violence are all the same, it really demystifies the whole thing.

in my youthful naivety, I thought that victims families were financially compensated for every true crime piece of media covering their loved ones case. I was so horrified when I found that out especially in light that true crime shit so rarely centers on memorializing the victim

I lose it when people talk about their "favorite murder" or "funniest murder podcast" or these damn YouTubers "true crime mukbang" or "true crime get ready with meee" and the ones who act serious are no better please, they have never and will never work together with the victims families or donate their revenue to them

It's also deeply misrepresentative of the type and nature of crime. Most victims given space on true crime are white women and children, most perpetrators are either white men described as masterminds or poc men described as monsters, and always a stranger, and it gives a picture of the world that's not indicative of reality. White women make up a very small percentage of murder by a stranger, most children entering sex trafficking are sold into it by their parents, most trafficking by percentage is for labor not sex, and so on. But it benefits the powers that be for us to be afraid of white women and children being besieged from all sides.
