@craigwillard: I didn't ask what happened. I asked you to fix it. An explanation isn't a resolution. #highperformer #mindset #craigwillard #highperformancemindset #highperformers #HighPerformerOS #fyp

I disagree. Any effective fix requires root cause analysis. Maybe you care about short term results, but I’m in the business of making sure it doesn’t happen again

Not every situation is fixable. In many cases the thing that needs fixed is your perspective. Having a mental block that you can’t get your job done because there’s a nagging problem that you insist must be fixed for you to be able to comfortably operate is a problem with you not with the unresolvable situation. Every job, every situation has unresolved issues. Sometimes there is no solution. Other times the solution is too costly. Yet other times the solution may eventually come but not immediately. Explaining the greater context of all of that is an attempt to get you over your mental block so that you can go do your job instead of being stuck waiting for everything to be perfectly “fixed.” You may think of yourself as a high performer but if you can’t perform in a situation where all the circumstances don’t perfectly align or all outstanding problems are not completely resolved, then I would argue you’re not actually a high performer.

No one here is fixing the problem lol. This is like listening to a meeting where everyone debates problems and nothing gets fixed. 😏

Fix this…this is the result of the last ten people saying to fix it without understanding all the fixes are causing the problem

This is the textbook example of what’s wrong with managements point of view, they don’t care about actually knowing what happens.

This is off base. High performers are not asking people to fix things and receiving root cause and history in response. High performers are the ones being asked to fix things and try to explain the root cause so the fix is durable and sustainable and they get shut down or not funded to implement a strategic fix.

Root cause analysis. If you want a fix and not why it happened and why the fixed worked then you’re doomed to repeat it

Origin story is important. The actual problem could be this is a recurring issue because we keep bandaiding it

Plot Twist: The high performers are the ones explaining the problem to you. instead of demanding action for the sake of action, you should slow down and listen to what it would actually take to fix the problem.

This is a false comparison. Most problems aren’t going to cause your business to go under in the next hour. Your boat may have sprung a leak but it’s not going to go under today. If it does, maybe it shouldn’t have been a business in the first place. Your impatience shows a lack of understanding how your people work to keep your business running in the long run. Chances are the holes are because of a decision that was made in ignorance. I’d rather have a slow fix with an understanding of what caused it that enables us to keep improving instead of a quick fix that ends up keeping us nailed in place.

when all you have is a leaky boat, every problem looks like a hole to fill. if you never figure out why your boat keeps springing leaks, you will sink regardless of how much effort you spent on plugging them

"I don't need to know why" means it will happen again because you have no interest in finding the heart of the problem. you don't want the source of the problem to be fixed, you want a bandaid that will peel off again and again. then you will blame the employee. they are trying to tell you the source of the problem because it's probably something they are not able to fix on their own and need to elevate it to you. an ounce of due diligence. listen to your employees.

Classic micromanager playbook. They ignore warning emails from the team on the ground, starve the project of funding by demanding constant "justification," and force 15 unnecessary people into every loop. Then they act shocked when it turns into a catastrophic emergency but somehow it’s the frontlines fault for making excuses. It’s not a progress issue; it’s a leadership failure.

You are missing the point. Being in a reactive mode doesn’t solve the root cause analysis which could be people and processes. I tend to do both because I document to CYA because it’s a corporate “I told you so”!

As a high performer, I’m asking for both, actually. The origin is just as important as the solution to avoid it happening again.

Get a butler then? If you need someone else to handle your shit then be ready to do so on their terms. If you have any understanding of what it was to be American then it wouldn't be an issue at all to socialize and understand who you're working with.

the explanation is usually to tell you why its still broken. somebody observed the problem and tried to fix it but they faced a bunch of obstacles. I zone out during the explanation and when theyre done, ask, what do you think we should do about it?

I’m assuming you are referring to scenarios that were the result of the managers actions. Or another teams actions. If my manager makes a mistake he will call me to show him what I’m seeing even though I always provide screen shots and attachments then he proceeds to keep me on the teams call and shares his screen so that I can watch him research his error. Total waste of my time.
