I wanted to start a perfume, skincare or clothing brand, and I once had a mentor tell me, “You’ll be broke forever unless you partner with someone like the Kardashians.” 😭 I remember sitting there like… excuse me??? He was a white male mentor, and his argument was that most people who start skincare, makeup, or clothing brands don’t actually become wealthy from them. What’s crazy is I had a friend who owned a clothing line tell me basically the SAME thing. And another friend who agreed with him. Now I’m sitting here crying like… 👁️👄👁️Maybe there’s some truth to what they were saying about how difficult the industry is, but I still wonder: is the problem the business model, the market, or the fact that you need a massive audience/celebrity backing to really scale? Because I still think about this conversation years later. 😂 right know I want to do skincare
