this means a lot to me. a whole life journey to find my birth parents from south korea, just fr that to be shut down just like that. denial of adoption from my birth parents. i have never felt more crushed and lost in my life. i grew up with an understanding that i could search for them, and possibly reconnect with them, but south korean standards- shame is all around them- especially a child out of wedlock and a single mother raising a child. i have felt lost, like i was wanting to not be white washed and be made fun of by other “true” asians- but now being rejected from the whole reason why i wanted to know my culture- i don’t know if i want to be involved with my culture anymore, until i realize, my past situation of adoption and biological blood family doesn’t define who i am today and who i have discovered. what ive realized is that, blood relatives don’t translate to an obligation to feel love- i have found more than just love with my adoptive family- the family who let me into their lives and truly wanted me, not just to dispose of and leave me in the dark. like people say, the past does not define who we are, and i wouldn’t trade knowing who i have discovered who i am for anything, even if the one mission in my life to find my biological family was shut down in a blink of an eye. i love who i am and who ive discovered over the years, and i am still south korea, even if i have grown to have a love-hate relationship with it.
