Today, on Heroes’ Day, I keep thinking about Cornelius Tulotokela Shimwaafeni, the young Namibian who risked his own life to save nine month old twins from drowning. 🇳🇦 For me, his story speaks to something much bigger than one heroic moment. It speaks to the kind of young men we desperately need to raise. Young men who do not look away when someone is vulnerable. Young men who understand that strength is not domination. Strength is protection. Strength is responsibility. Strength is having the courage to step forward when everybody else is standing back. And this is exactly why Voices Against Violence matters so deeply to me. If we want to change the story of violence in our homes and communities, we cannot only speak to men once they are grown. We must begin with our boys. We must teach them that manhood carries responsibility. I also believe deeply in the father role, and I am not merely talking about fathering a biological child. Fatherhood is bigger than reproduction. It is an office. It is an ordained responsibility to protect, guide, provide wisdom, create safety and stand in the gap for those who may not be able to stand for themselves. A man can have children and never truly occupy the office of fatherhood. And another man can protect, mentor, guide and cover an entire generation without ever having biologically fathered them. That distinction matters. When a young Cornelius saw two helpless babies in danger, something inside him said: I cannot simply stand here and watch. That is the spirit we need. Because violence also thrives when good people look away. When women are being abused. When children are unsafe. When another human being is being diminished. When someone needs protection. We need young men who will say: Not while I am here. On this Heroes’ Day, may we remember that heroes are not only found in our history books. We are still raising them. And perhaps one of the greatest things we can do for Namibia is raise boys who understand that being a man is not about how much power you have over people, but how responsibly you use your strength for people.
