@saint: Vintage photos of cats from the 1800s and early 1900s can feel strangely familiar. Long before Instagram, people were already photographing cats with their families, posing them for studio portraits and even dressing them in ridiculous costumes. More than a century later, the cameras and clothes have changed, but the relationship clearly has not. One of the strangest surviving examples is Brünnhilde, a tabby photographed in 1936 wearing a tiny winged helmet and miniature armour. Photographer Adolph Edward Weidhaas dressed her as the Valkyrie Brünnhilde from Wagner’s Ring operas, and the photographs were even displayed in a New York photography shop as advertising. They are now preserved by the Library of Congress.
