At my white school was hosting a cultural night where all the kids and their parents were invited. my mom was a stay at home mom of 4 kids, dad worked 99% of the time. She said she couldn't come. l understood. During the African presentation, a Zulu group danced and sang. As the woman was singing in Zulu, We all suddenly heard a woman sing aloud in the crown. So we all turned, it was my mom, standing up, proudly singing along. Not only did she show up, she sang along. At the end of the show, everyone clapped. l was so proud of my mom. l was always ashamed of my african heritage as a kid especially since my family actually spoke the language with the "clicks". Love my mom forever, true icon. Core memory for sure.
