You should NEVER grab a snapping turtle by its tail!! It is part of the attached spine vertebrae and can seriously injure the turtle. If you need to relocate it, you can safely do so by grabbing it on either side of the shell on the very back (not the sides), and if it is too heavy to pick up, dragging will do.

I once saw a turtle un the road, got out to help, got within 10 ft saw it was a snapping turtle, I did an about face, got back in my car, locked my doors, cracked my window, yelled "good luck buddy" and drove away.
