Here's why: it starts as mineral oil — the clear byproduct left over when crude oil is refined into fuel — then it's forced to blend with water using waxes and emulsifiers, greased up with lanolin scraped from sheep's wool, and carried down into your skin by propylene glycol, the same penetration solvent used to keep antifreeze from freezing. The problem is where it goes. This is sold for eczema and cracked, broken skin — and a damaged skin barrier soaks up far more than healthy skin does. So the petroleum and solvents don't just sit on top, they sink into the exact skin that's least able to keep them out.
