Take everything out of boxes at home. The amount of cardboard is overwhelming in the dorm room. Bring a door stop!

Plan to leave for a bit and let your kid have some time in the room alone to do their thing. We went and got drinks/snacks for us all. It gave everyone a moment to breathe during an emotionally charged day and allowed the student to be alone and take it all in for a little.

A step stool that you bring home with you, painters tape!! Do not put command strips directly to the walls, use painters tape first!!

Oh can I tell you what it’s NOT? My family used to have a liquor store so when we needed boxes, we always just used the ones from the liquor store. We were so numb to it. When we loaded the dolly with dozens of booze boxes, we got LOOKS I can still feel 15 years later 😂

have 1 tote bag with all the necessities. scissors, painters tape, command hooks/strips,cell phone power bank, surge protector, small tool kit, clorox wipes, snacks and an extra bottle of water. make it brightly colored so its easy to find in the chaos. I added my wallet and keys to the bag and I was good to go.

if you are buying drawers, fill them before you move like use them as a packing tool. take a rubber mallet. most dorm furniture is adjustable but sometimes hard to get apart but a rubber mallet will help.

Just take the mattress off the lofted bed in order to put it all together…fitted sheet, mattress topper, zip-up cover and then the final fitted sheet. Wayyyyy easier than trying to climb up there and do it.

We brought our beach wagon. Those loading bins from school are first come, first serve and not a guarantee…that was a game changer for us!

Pack a lunchbox full of sandwiches/snacks and drinks. Don’t need to be hangry and away from food or drinks during that stressful of a time.

Make the bed last. Like set up the mattress topper etc and don’t put the sheets and cute begging on until dead last because you will use the bed as a table until the stuff is put away.

this is for after the school year!!! Get a storage unit close to campus. You do not have to move everything back home for the summer only to take home what they need.

Bringing a mini fridge for the dorm? Stock it full of snacks and drinks before you leave your house, bungee it shut so it doesn’t spill on the way, and then when you arrive at the dorm and plug it in, it is fully loaded for them.

Ok not for move in but for move OUT: when they bring everything home wash and repack the bedding/towels/sheets and don’t unpack anything that you will be moving back. You will thank yourself

Put everything together ahead of time so all you have to do is carry it inside and arrange it. No sitting in the floor all sweaty following ikea instructions.

Our daughter has lots of stuff. It just is who she is, it’s tough to be a minimalist in our family apparently. That said, a storage unit! Last year we got one at the end of junior year, $23 a month, what are we talking three months? She slowly moved things in there before move out, everything coming home was in one car we didn’t have to worry about where to store everything for the summer, one Carlo driving up, emptied it yesterday, a couple trips to Storage and done. So much easier. And just the closet sized was plenty. Game changer.

@Jamie: Your kid needs so much less stuff than you think. 1/3 will come home at Christmas, 1/3 will get thrown out at the end of spring. Love, A Collegiate Faculty/ Staff person
