We been saying college was doomed for over 10 years... How are people going to college for anything other than law or medicine 💀

Software engineer here. There’s still jobs. Build some stuff. Apply to smaller companies. Don’t chase big tech

writing code is not automating our job away. I have complete faith in my career longevity because yes AI can code, but it still takes a real coder who is skilled in coding to prompt the AI and ensure the code given back from AI is functional and works properly per the specifications required. a non-coder would not be able to do this.

Real question: do you think anyone will need to learn to code or like how are things shifting now? English instructions?

Coding isn’t really hard though, I’m a staff software engineer and coding isn’t the hard part.

hi sr engineer here if you can tough it our and find a Jr job (I know it's hard rn) you Will be in a great spot. We see SO much unmaintainable vibe coded nightmares that are going to need experienced engineers in the future to fix.

I literally had Claude tell me today incorrect information about a bug and I figured it out myself, corrected Claude and it just says “yep you’re absolutely right”. This happens all the time, there will be lots of bugs created with the AI slop.

yeah, when I started in 2010 it was like vector machines and decision trees, mostly relevant to finance, video games and weather. How was I supposed to know it would turn to this hellscape?

Gotta shift the frame of reference from your job being writing code to your job being to solve problems. Knowing how to code is still going to be a huge asset even as the use of AI increases.

Software engineers need to realize how powerful they've become with AI empowerment. Kick the employment addiction. You can literally build and run Entire SaaS businesses on your own. You just need the idea. You have the knowledge.

10 years ago we thought the next victim of computerization was people who drove for a living and "better learn to code" was the crass eyeroll advice for people who'd be affected. No one graduating in the late 2010's was anticipating coding jobs would disappear in the near future.

I’m a senior tech lead (or was) - don’t worry all of us that are bored of AI are starting up software adjacent businesses without AI so the jobs will continue on, the big names just have to die off first

I'm happy that I started working like 10 years ago as a developer. But I see enough economics people who think they don't need software engineers while producing the hottest garbage. As long as you get deeper into software architecture or UX you should be fine. Only the missing experience from working in code that goes to production could be a problem.

I always had a feeling that front end and webpage sort of things would get toolified to the point where designers wouldn't have to know anything about html, but the thought that friendly coding challenges would be solved by AIs in only a few seconds is absurd.

as an english major i was told i had lots of options. i think in general the issue is academics aren't given the space (or simply don't care) to educate themselves on the real prospects of their students

I'm in the field now and if it's any reassurance, they definitely still need people manually writing and reviewing code. Especially on massive legacy projects. At least Copilot which is what my company chose to get a license for is not able to fully comprehend what's going on and produce correct output without me constantly redirecting it.
