@xoxosugarmagsxoxo: dozens of protesters left their wheelchairs and mobility devices behind and physically crawled or pulled themselves up the Capitol steps. It was a deliberate visual demonstration: this is what an inaccessible society requires disabled people to do. The ADA had already been introduced in Congress, so they weren't crawling up the steps simply to "ask for disability rights" in a general sense. They were putting direct pressure on Congress to pass the pending ADA without further delay or weakening it. Four months later, Congress passed the legislation, and President George H. W. Bush signed the ADA into law on July 26, 1990. #ada #disability #civilrights

They fact they had to literally dehumanize themselves by crawling up steps to prove a point breaks my heart but I admire them for doing what they believed would show everyone why accessibility is needed.

Every person who participated in the capitol crawl is so incredibly strong, and they shouldn’t have had to be. Accessibility should have always been the default 😭

makes me sick they had to do this. But how fucking strong of them to show up, and show out. even babies! The urge to help would be so strong, but to stand back and support thats respect.

My sweet Aunt Charlene had to wait nearly 50 years just to have access to the town library. The public could have cared less if she could read let alone have access to books. She waited 40 years for people to even consider she was a person. She lived to be 83 and I didn’t have to say goodbye to her until 2022. She was an extraordinary woman, I miss her wisdom.

also, if you think something that’s accessible is “stupid” or “silly” because “who needs that” just be grateful you don’t have rely on it
