My wife was HR manager at the Tyson plant in Lexington Nebraska that closed earlier this year. It was a 3500 head per day plant that only operated 36 hours max per week the past two years. Cargill in Fort Morgan isn’t in any hurry to open. The cattle aren’t there to kill. It affects my family directly and my wife loved working for them. That said they can purchase the same number of cattle and pay the freight on all or some cattle and run more efficiently not having the extra overhead. There is not a beef plant in the country (big 4 plants) that had operated at capacity for the past 18-24 months. It sucks

So are the packers not planning on a beef herd rebuild and just banking on imports from south America? The long term confuses me

If you have seen the poor condition of that plant you wouldn’t question it. It’s old. An old IBP plant.

They also said that they are starting a second shift at Amarillo. 5500/hd a a shift. They plan to close down Pasco, WA also to focus workforce in Dakota City, Holcomb, and the Amarillo plants.

Well the government is up our ass in everything else we do, maybe force them to sell shuttered plants. With what the taxpayers forked out to the packers during Covid, they essentially can just make one phone call.

For them it’s cheaper to truck the animals to a facility that can handle more capacity. In my opinion 🤷🏻♂️

Heard a part of this was renegotiating with the union whose contract is up in September but that’s not what they’re going to say

I don’t know anything about anything but I see it getting ugly on their end before they can afford to make it ugly on our end

I'm sure they will just start buying boxed beef from small packers east of the Mississippi instead of buying fats and then trucking them everywhere
