I’m an extravort and i love my socially anxious friends… i do try to get them to expand their horizons but I definitely understand when they don’t want to socialize with folks.. because i will occasionally get that social anxiety too… it hits me out of nowhere 😭

when I was a teenager this happened a lot with a particular friend. it was usually that she would say we were doing one thing and then end up doing something else and she always put me on the spot in from of other people so I'd look like the buzz kill if I said I didn't want to go. when I brought it up once she said she didn't tell me in advance because I would say no. so when I realized that it wasn't spontaneous plans, but actually intentionally withholding information I stopped going out with her. we continued being friends and we hung out if I invited her but not the other way around. gave her another chance because I thought that was unfair and she did it again. but this time I told her I wasn't going (in front of her other friend) and that "she was free to go but I'll be going home" and I guess it was embarrassing or maybe she felt guilty since I came from far to hang out with her. I know it was totally unexpected to her because she was flustered and didn't know what to do. basically she had to cancel her plans (that she made without me). but at least it has never happened again. funny enough now that she TELLS me about the other plans I'm much more inclined to go because I can mentally prepare to interact with others I don't know. I may not want to but relationships are give and take.

After reading some comments I just realised how much people downplay social anxiety. If these people truly cared about their friends, they wouldn't say face your fear. Those panic attacks are really painful and embarrassing, plus they set us back years of accumulated social comfort. We also want to leave the cocoon, but it's not that easy.
