@freedom_faction: Turkish authorities have launched the first excavations on the northern section of #GöbekliTepe, one of the world’s oldest known monumental sites. Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that work has started in a previously untouched 80-by-70-meter area on the mound. Geophysical surveys and surface scans indicate the presence of large public buildings, rectangular structures, and possible huts in this zone. Excavations are running alongside ongoing digs under protective shelters and conservation efforts to strengthen existing T-shaped pillars against seismic activity. #Göbekli Tepe, located in southeastern #Turkey near Şanlıurfa, dates to around 9600–8000 BCE. Built by hunter-gatherer communities before the widespread adoption of farming, the site is famous for its massive circular enclosures and carved limestone pillars. Only about 5–10% of the overall area has been excavated so far, leaving most of the site still buried. Early finds from the new northern trenches already include rectangular buildings linked to the site’s later phase. These discoveries could offer fresh insights into daily life, architecture, and social organization at this remarkable prehistoric complex. Work continues under Turkey’s Heritage for the Future project, balancing research with careful preservation of the #UNESCO World Heritage site. #ancienthistory
