@shearflame: Replying to @garrett_nash Teaching has gotten harder due to covid, constant changes in curriculum, teaching methods, and hostle working environments. Where just telling students verbally or through decoration if they're gay, trans, or BIPOC, that they're safe and their lives matter can get you fired. #teaching #teachersoftiktok #bookban #covid #medialiteracy
I watched the media center for a day. Got told to hand out worksheets for kindergarten to 2nd grade. Many kindergarteners could not yet read. Some couldn't speak English. When a teacher came to pick up her class she told me the parent wanted the child to "just pick [English] up" and that the teachers couldn't speak Spanish to her. I'm a hermit; I was terrible at that job. It paid $15/hr, $19/hr for ESE. Actual teachers make around $30/hr. Teachers are trying. It's just so damn hard.

I love educators and idk how you all are doing it right now, I can’t believe how bad things have deteriorated from an already broken state! Teachers are doing their best with their hands tied, low pay, no respect and unimaginable stress and circumstances. I was one who was protesting 20+ years about the destructive effects of No Child Left Behind…. I saw it coming, in a way… but I never saw 2016 coming, Betsy DeVos, rampant book bannings, or Covid. Thank you for caring, for still trying, for fighting against insane odds

Learning you do part time substitute teaching is so cool and I just wanted to say through out how hard things have gotten; and maybe I'm just speaking as an asocial aspie(with hyperacusis) who if I didn't have my big sister I had very specific teachers who helped me(because my maman is very harsh because of my autism; she thinks my lack of understanding or taking certain things hyper literal is purposely being difficult) I just want you to know for as hard as it gets the work you do is incredibly important and even if it feels draining or like it's gotten to a point where things feel deeply pointless you're likely one of the few people making certain kids; especially those like myself, feel like we have a chance in a world that wasn't designed for us. And I know that's not relevant to what you were talking about here, but it feels important to say this to teachers now more than ever. So just keep up the amazing work because it does mean a lot.

I don’t disagree entirely. It’s a two way street. Parents need to teach kids respect, teachers need to teach based on research on what makes people retain information. States shouldn’t be forcing how someone teaches, the state just needs to make sure topics are being taught.
