After Alexander the Great conquered Persia, Iranian dynasties eventually returned to power, including the Parthians and Sasanian Empire, which fought Rome and Byzantium for centuries. In the 7th century, the Arab-Muslim conquest brought Iran under Islamic rule, but Persian language and culture survived and strongly influenced the wider Islamic world. Later, dynasties such as the Samanids, Seljuks, Safavids, and Qajars ruled Iran; the Safavids were especially important because they established Twelver Shia Islam as Iran’s state religion.
