I think often "bad representation" of autism is shown when you CLEARLY didn't do any research of autism traits and just collect a bunch of traits and throw it in the character. Like the mc from the Music movie

often the "bad representation" is a realistic autistic character that isn't treated fairly by the narrative and everyone blames the characters traits and not the writers who make their character suffer... *cough* Sheldon.

Oh my god yes I hate when people complain about “bad representation” just because it’s a very specific portrayal that isn’t supposed to be a universal representation!!!! It just happened with the TADC where Jax is “bad trans rep” it’s so annoying when that happens in any way

The only time I say that a character is a bad representation of autism is when the actor, writers, and directors uses Autism Speaks as a reference for how to make autistic characters

The only time I see it as bad representation, is almost never. Autism is a spectrum, saying that it’s bad representation doesn’t make sense. I’ve only really seen a few times where is actual bad representation.

The only GENUINE bad autism rep I’ve ever seen is that movie by sia. I know a lot of people also hate the good doctor. And it’s not my cup of tea after a few seasons. But the only reason I see it as bad rep is because the actor has donated to autism speaks.

This is exactly why the best representation for any minority group will always be more and varied representation. If there is more representation all encompassing different experiences there will hopefully be less pressure on every marginalized character to be representing an entire group of individuals all with unique experiences.

I usually run into people who refuse to accept that a character is autistic coded or who pretend that because it’s never stated out loud that this person is autistic or some type of neurodivergent then that means no one‘s allowed to say that out loud I’ve meant very few people who are willing to continue a conversation about an autistic character and media without actively getting ticked off that you care about them being an autistic character while they just wanna downplay it as you trying to force a trait on a character that was supposed to be a joke as if having autism in media is a joke. I hate hate.

In my opinion, bad representation of autism has nothing to do with the symptoms, suport needs ect. I just can't stand when the narrative treats the autism as 'bad' and any strength as 'despite' the autism. Or when the character is a savant, and being savant is the 'good' part of autism. That pisses me off.

People also mix up over representation with BAD representation. Yes there is an over representation of autistic characters who are savants or hyper intelligent. That doesn’t make them bad representation. That is the reality for many autistic people, we can criticize the fact that it’s favored over other representations without putting down the representation itself.
