This photograph, known as The Vulture and the Little Girl, was taken by South African photojournalist Kevin Carter during the 1993 famine in Sudan. It became one of the most famous and controversial images ever published. The picture appeared to show a starving child collapsed on the way to a feeding center while a vulture waited nearby.
