@exploretex: The World’s Largest Bat Colony is in Texas Bracken Cave is 30 miles north east of San Antonio Home to 20 Million Mexican free-tailed bats during peak summer This is also the largest concentration of Mammals on Earth, and the Largest nursery on the planet It takes about 3.5-4.5 hours for the entire swarm to leave the 100ft wide sinkhole They then travel up to 60 miles in one evening, and collectively eat 150 tons of bugs every night These are commuter bats, so they return back to the same cave at night. And also a maternity colony, so nearly all the bats arriving in spring are pregnant females Each year approximately 50 tons of guano is deposited on the cave floor. Which can reach up to 100 ft tall Bat poop was once Texas’ largest mineral export (before oil). It was used for gunpowder during the civil ware and agriculture fertiliser due to the high levels of nitrogen. This cave is owned and protected by Bat Conservation International You cannot buy tickets at the door, and All of 2026 reservations are sold out. I’d recommend monitoring the website for any tickets becoming available (like I did) Send this to a bat enthusiast #texascaves #brackencave #bats #texasoutdoors #texaswildlife
and being an ex spelunker that means a person who goes into caves you cannot go into this cave without proper breathing apparatus because the ammonia from the back guano is toxic did you know get the most caves out of anywhere in the United States or in the state of Texas and all caves are 72 to 78 degrees all year round just a little fact I thought you might like to know
