@outspoken_samantha: It's Back to school and Mom's are complaining. This Mom doesn't want to be forced to have a chromebook for her child because she KNOWS they'll break it. Ma'am... why aren't you teaching your kid responsibility?? #backtoschool #education #teachersoftiktok #entitled #epicfail

As a technology person in a school, I started enforcing the payment policy last year. You’d be surprised how many actually started taking care of their school issued Chromebooks.

I disagree. I had 2 students with disabilities that included behavior issues. I refused to sign the replacement policy because I KNEW something would happen. I also told them that the Chromebook was NOT to come home. We agreed that we would not be responsible for it and my kids would have to check them in/out each day. I had computers at home they could use for any schoolwork.

in our district, you can buy Insurance I believe it’s $50 and I’m pretty sure there’s no deductible.

I disagree. My kid was always the smallest, and picked on a lot. My kids classmates broke several Chromebooks and stole the charging cables multiple times. I was on the hook for a few of those broken Chromebooks, but not all. My kids have always been careful with their things. They didn’t even bend the axles on their toy cars, they are still in perfect condition after 20+ years. My kids are fortunately grown now … but that was a nightmare being responsible for technology that severely limited how they learned.

Samantha, in her defense. Equipment for school is far more expensive than it was when I went to school. Back then, it was just ,pens, pencils, papers and a few books. School supplies didn't cost over 200+ USD, each. But then, I went to school before the Digital Age.

I understand teaching responsibility that mandating it is ridiculous. With all the problems is the public school system, I see no reason to inflict it on your children

to be fair. making it mandatory... you should supply it. I agree with everything else pretty much but damn. kids do kids shit... accidents happens. STUPID happens. if it's mandatory... you supply it . that's why car manufacturers can't make it mandatory you have your car serviced there. if it's MANDATORY. you have to provide it free.

I remember we had to bring textbooks home….multiple textbooks. We covered them with paper bags, and we had to take care of them. Even if it rained!

I agree with what you’re saying, but shoving a tablet in front of a child isn’t teaching them anything. The test scores reflect that fact. Children learn LESS when they learn on a computer.

So it can go both ways. Our school demands my son (who is high school) has a Chromebook and tried to tell me I had to pay to fix it if it is broke. My son is also autistic and in special ed classes. He has impulse control so things are going to happen. He had a one on one when younger but now has just gotten to the point of special ed classes. I flat out refuse to pay when he is not yet ready to have an easily breakable device.

Yes, the school board said all kids need to computer. This is because, at least where I live, the state standard testing is not all online. But, the parent isnnot supposed to just give the computer to the child. It is only needed for certain things. This mom just does not want to have to deal with actual parenting and teaching her kid not to break things.

Our school allows us to pay $10 ….TEN WHOLE DOLLARS.For insurance for it so if something happens….we are good. What’s the problem? It better than carrying so many books and forgetting them or losing them or spilling water all over and ruining them.
