@nealkshah: Listening to music may cut dementia risk by nearly 40%, and it is one of the simplest brain-health habits you can start today. A study published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry analyzed more than 10,000 older adults and found that those who regularly listened to music had about a 39% lower chance of developing dementia compared with those who rarely did. The best part: this was about simply listening, not playing an instrument, taking lessons, or attending concerts. All you need is a playlist you love. Researchers believe music engages memory, attention, and emotion all at once, giving the aging brain a gentle, enjoyable workout. To put this to use, play music during daily routines like cooking, walking, or your morning coffee, since people who made it a habit saw the biggest benefit. Keep the volume moderate, because hearing loss is itself a dementia risk factor. Follow for more brain-health tips, and share this with someone who loves their music. #DementiaPrevention #BrainHealth #HealthyAging #music

So it just makes me wonder even almost nonverbal dementia patients are still able to recognize and move to the beat of music…. It makes them very emotional.

My mom had Alzheimer’s and wandered so we needed to put her in a nursing home. Every month I would go visit and take her for a long drive. I would play music from my phone and we would both sing. I got songs from when she was a teenager during the blitz in London, England. She didn’t like those because they took her back to hard times. She, however, loved the songs from when I was a young kid since those were happy times raising three children. The emotional component is so strong with the music of our lives.

This really works..I came to visit my 91 Y/O Mom and she barely remembered who I was. Yet in the car when I brought up her 70's play list, she was singing and knew all the songs and was so happy.

In the same vein....when I was very young and left an abusive, extremely controlling relationship, the first thing I did was buy 6 classical albums on my Columbia record house account, and played them whenever I could in my new tiny apartment. (My ex hated classical music). Music is still important in my 70s. I sing stupid songs to my dog.

This is so interesting because I was just walking through a forest, holding a cat in one hand and a book in the other while I walked my dog, doing deep knee bends and listening to Mozart on my headphones. And then I took a nap under a tree. I feel great.
