Two department heads thoroughly questioned. One board member had walked out looking like he had just reconsidered every decision he’d made since joining the company. Even her assistant had learned to knock twice before entering. Lena wasn’t cruel. She was simply difficult to please when she was having a bad day. And today was definitely one of those days. So when the conference-room doors finally opened just before lunch, half the floor quietly exhaled. Lena stepped out, expression unreadable, a tablet tucked beneath one arm. Her assistant hurried after her. “Mrs. Schuett, the revised figures are…” A small voice suddenly echoed down the hallway. “Mama!” Lena stopped. Everything about her changed. The tension disappeared from her shoulders. The stern line of her mouth softened. And the terrifying CEO who had spent the entire morning making grown executives nervous suddenly smiled. “My babies.” The elevator doors opened. Miu stepped out carrying two little lunch bags. Nobody said it aloud. Nobody was stupid enough. But the entire executive floor silently celebrated. Because if Mrs. Schuett was here, their terrifying boss was about to have lunch with her family. Lena shook her head. “Come on.” She held out her hand. The twins immediately grabbed the other one. And just like that, the feared CEO disappeared into her office with her entire family. …… The moment the office door closed, Lena wrapped both arms around Miu’s waist. Miu laughed softly. “There she is.” Lena buried her face against her wife’s shoulder. “I missed you.” “You saw me yesterday.” “That was yesterday.” Miu ran her fingers through Lena’s hair. “You’ve had a long day?” “Terrible.” One twin looked up from the sofa. “Mama was grumpy?” Miu glanced at Lena. “Apparently.” Lena lifted her head. “I was not grumpy.” Both twins looked at each other. “Yes, you were.” Miu burst out laughing. Lena stared at her children in betrayal. “I am surrounded by traitors.” “You’re loved,” Miu corrected. “That too.” They settled around the small table near the windows. Miu unpacked everything she’d brought while the twins excitedly told their mother about their morning. Lena listened to every word. She smiled. She laughed. She asked questions. She looked nothing like the woman who had walked into the conference room that morning. Miu noticed something, though. Lena wasn’t eating. “Eat.” “I am.” “You’ve taken three bites.” “They were large bites.” Miu gave her a look. Lena smiled innocently. Then leaned closer. “Feed me.” Miu blinked. “What?” “Feed me.” “You have two functioning hands.” “I’ve had a difficult day.” Miu stared at her.
