There were other cities that were buried in mud. The higher elevation cities were very much intact but also empty. The East Coast cities were inundated with overgrowth of trees etc.so much so they had to burn the overgrowth to get to these capitol buildings aka Great Fires. They had to be empty a long time, centuries.
