@radiojojo0: Just watched the #josemourinho doc on @NetflixUK and absolutely loved it but…is this possible… #bilingualproblems #languagelesson #languagetok #portugal🇵🇹
Its not how the language sounds. It's our culture and way of saying things. The Portuguese language is very literal, Portuguese people are very direct and it translates good in our own language, but not in other languages that are more indirect.

when english is your second language its easier to be bolder and less polite beause there is like a barrier between you and those word that doesnt exist with your mother tongue.

it is a common to have different "personalities" depending on the language you are speaking. there is this portuguese comediant that mostly do English speaking shows, André (forgot his last name) that as said he doesn't have the same feelings in portuguese and in English, like, you can insult me in English and i would't feel almost anything about it, but say something rude to me in portuguese and i cry😂😅

I think in English there's that expectation of the politically correct in Portuguese "is pão pão queijo queijo" "ou sim ou sopas", there's no softener it is what it is if you good you good if you bad ...well you bad 😉

I said the same thing about Ronaldo, what he says in Portuguese doesn’t come across the same way in English. Something is lost in the translation a lot of times that comes across as arrogance in the way it is said

i agree! it sounds more arrogant in english but we can’t deny that he also does come across that way 😂 maybe rightly so since he does a great job and delivers as a manager most of the time

Eu entendo-te ! E sou portista adoro o Mourinho ... but ... when he started his career at Porto he said "we're the best and under no circumstances we're losing this year, we're winning it all, then smacks the table and leaves" 😂 I mean I liked it as a Porto fan but if that's not over confidence then what is ? 😂

Portuguese here who's fluent in English but hasn't lived in the UK. I'm not really sure if Portuguese are more literal. I often find Portuguese people less assertive. Having said that when you don't have full control over a language you often lack the vocabulary that gives the right nuance or softens a statement. You may not know the right verbal form (conditionals are important) adjective or colloquial euphemisms. It goes both ways.
I find people who speak one language only or never struggled with speaking a foreign language to be less forgiving.

I was once told it was the ‘Russian’ sounding accent 😂 I mean…. It’s a harsh accent ahahha. On top of that I think we all come across very differently not only because of the sentence structure, cultural differences but even our voice change a bit from Portuguese to English.

Honestly I relate, I come across as confident and eloquent in English but in Portuguese the best word to describe it is meek 😭 I acc get so embarrassed because I have no Portuguese accent and my Portuguese is getting worse

I believe it has to do with the background culture just because you can speak more than one language. Your primary culture background gets transfered into your secondary languages. Portuguese language directly translated with the directive of way of interpretation actually sounds rude or to indirect that sounds direct with comes abroad as rude. I found this out when I moved back to portugal having lived abroad 35 years I struggled and sometimes still struggle at times to understand if they trying to be rude or speaking with out real meaning 😂

My partner keeps saying, “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.” 😂
England is very politically correct, whereas Portuguese people… well, we just say it as it is! 🇵🇹 We’re blunt, straight to the point and pretty much without a filter. 😂
And that’s probably why CR7, Mourinho and now me come across the way we do! 🤣😂
Different culture, I think! 😂🇵🇹🇬🇧

Haven't watched it yet but 100% people come across differently in their native language - you can translate phrases but that doesn't give cultural context (hence why translating spanish/portuguese songs sounds crazy in english sometimes)

está relacionado com a cultura de cada língua.
o exemplo perfeito é a C-word. quando um americano diz a palavra é feio quando um inglês diz a palavra é uma vírgula que depende do contexto da situação.
