The industry is definitely bifurcated, these companies do exist however there are plenty that don’t operate like this.

For NW Mutual and insurance companies, yes. For traditional wealth management firms, absolutely not

This is incredibly broad and generally untrue. There are plenty of firms and roles that are exactly as you described, but also a lot that are not. Many older advisors already have large books and need younger people to train to eventually take over. Private Wealth especially involves unique portfolio management and actually stock picking. If your job is simply selling financial products you don’t understand to friends and family in your 20s then quit, you are being scammed, but don’t let this guy fool you into thinking it is all the same. - A CFA working in PWM as a portfolio associate on a 2B discretionary book.

You are correct about wealth management is sales… for about the first 2-4 years. You are wrong that its a game about burning all your social capital on relatives and friends. Most people in my office dont work with a single friend or relative, they built their business entirely just dialing and networking. You are wrong about people not trusting you until you have grey hair. You are wrong about it just being allocating money in ETFs. You are wrong about it just being booking meetings for your boss/ manager. There are companies that are a lot like what youre describing and there are companies where it couldnt be more different. I think if youre someone who likes talking to people and want to manage money, its not a bad career path. If you think youre too good to cold call, then yeah do something else.

Great video sheesh. I’ve always thought this and wondered why people were so okay with going into that role. It almost seems like people are really just drawn to the name “wealth management” it’s self because it sounds somewhat prestigious even tho it really isn’t

Super accurate, I interned in WM and decided to do IB instead for that reason. It’s a sales job not a finance job
