Conceived by French astronomer Pierre Léna and flown by test pilot André Turcat, the flight departed Gran Canaria, intercepted the eclipse path over Mauritania with split-second precision, and tracked the shadow across Mali, Niger, and Nigeria before landing in Chad, extending totality for its passengers to an unprecedented 74 minutes compared to just seven minutes from the ground.
