Arashiyama (1890), by Yōshū Chikanobu, is a Meiji-period color woodblock print from the series Gentō shashin kurabe(Daydreams by Magic Lantern). It depicts an elegantly dressed woman before a circular vision of Arashiyama, Kyoto, designed to resemble an image projected by a magic lantern—an exciting new technology in nineteenth-century Japan. The blossoms and autumn leaves connect her clothing to the celebrated seasonal beauty of the landscape, while the projection suggests a memory, fantasy, or private longing.
