The 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami (officially named by the Japan Meteorological Agency as the 2011 Tōhoku Pacific Coast Earthquake) (Tōhoku Chihō Taiheiyō-oki Jishin) (or Great East Japan Earthquake (Higashi-Nihon Dai-shinsai)), was a magnitude 9.1 earthquake on the Richter schale (which generated tsunami waves up to 40.5 m) that occurred at 14:46:23 local time (UTC+9) on Friday, March 11, 2011. The epicenter was located offshore, off the coast of Honshu, 130 km east of Sendai, in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, at a depth of 29.9 km. The earthquake lasted approximately six minutes, according to seismologists. The USGS explained that the earthquake occurred due to a displacement in the vicinity of from the subduction zone between the Pacific and North American plates. At the latitude where this earthquake occurred, the Pacific Plate is moving westward relative to the North American Plate at a rate of 83 mm/year. The Pacific Plate is being forced under Japan at the Japan Trench, and is sinking westward beneath Asia. The Tsunami: The earthquake displaced a massive mass of water, generating waves that reached heights of up to 40 meters in some areas and penetrated up to 10 km inland, sweeping away entire cities. The tsunami that struck Japan resulted in the deaths of nearly 16,000 people and left more than 2,000 missing. It was the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan to date, as well as the fourth most powerful in the world in the last five hundred years measured or calculated using modern techniques. Since 1973, the Japan Trench subduction zone has experienced nine seismic events of magnitude 7 or greater. The March 11, 2011, event resulted in 15,899 deaths, 2,556 missing persons, and approximately 6,152 injuries. #tsunami #Hurricane #Tornado #ExtremeWeather #japan
