@freds_mummy: As an OT + mum, this is one of my favourite parts of our bedtime routine. I use firm, slow, rhythmic massage and keep the same pattern each night, counting as I go. I’m intentionally giving him predictable proprioceptive and tactile input through his muscles, joints and skin. Why do I love this before bed? -Proprioceptive input can be calming and organising for the nervous system. -Rhythmic, predictable touch gives his nervous system information that is consistent and easy to anticipate. -Repetition helps create a familiar cue that bedtime is approaching. -And perhaps most importantly, it’s a lovely opportunity for connection and co-regulation before we transition to sleep. For us, the same pattern, the same counting and the same gentle connection have become part of our bedtime rhythm. Every baby is different, always follow your baby’s cues and stop if they show signs that they don’t enjoy the input. #otmum #occupationaltherapist #sensoryintegration #bedtimeroutine
