A 20-year-old woman named Yareni Rios-Gonzalez was handcuffed in the back of a parked police cruiser that was struck by a freight train. She survived the crash with severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, a skull fracture, and multiple broken bones, and later received an $8.5 million legal settlement.

Her name is Yareni Rios-Gonzalez. In September 2022 in Colorado, police stopped her over an alleged road-rage incident. An officer parked his patrol SUV directly on active railroad tracks. Another officer handcuffed Rios-Gonzalez and put her in the back of that SUV while the officers searched her vehicle. Then a freight train came. She was still handcuffed and trapped in the back seat and reportedly screamed for help as it approached. The train slammed straight into the police vehicle She somehow SURVIVED. Reports describe a traumatic/severe head injury and numerous broken bones; contemporary reporting listed injuries including nine broken ribs, a broken arm and leg, and a fractured sternum. Other reporting specifically describes a skull fracture and broken back as well. in June 2024, Fort Lupton and Platteville agreed to an $8.5 MILLION settlement with her. Two officers faced criminal consequences. Officer Jordan Steinke, who put her into the cruiser, was convicted of reckless endangerment and assault and received probation/community service; Pablo Vazquez, who parked the cruiser on the tracks, pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and also received probation. Both lost their jobs.
