I cannot simply pass over Eminescu’s critique of capital detached from morality, as it contains profound spiritual insight. The romanian poet worked with what might be called an anti-economistic premise, which rejected the inversion formulated by materialist approaches: not a rejection of economic life itself, but a rejection of its elevation into the highest end. Eminescu didn’t write from abstract nostalgia, as he was an eyewitness to westernisation, watching the romanian organic world violently collapse to new French ideas and capital. His position was not a mindless defence of every historical form of feudalism, yet he recognised in the older Moldavian order, and particularly in its guilds, free peasants and obligations of service, the remnants of an organic spiritual-social principle. He saw ideal feudal bond as a covenant of the soul where the higher classes were legitimized only by their sacrosanct obligation to protect the lower (as we can see it in its early medieval forms, before its degeneration caused by mobility restrictions and centralisation). To me, this corresponds with the metaphysical doctrine of “atman”, the inherent worth and divine spark in all human beings, and the ontological principle of “noblesse oblige” found in all cultures. The critique therefore is sharp: a system of obligation and rank tied together was replaced with the predatory rule of speculation. What was dissolved was not merely an economic arrangement, but a moral, metaphysical world in which power could justify itself only through charity and service. #eminescu #distributism #noblesseoblige #chesterton #perennialphilosophy #spirituality #esoteric
