externalizing it. I 1000% stole this idea from somebody else, but I loved her depiction so much I used it for myself: making the ocd an amateur goose detective who's always trying to "catch" things, but sometimes (all the time) he's reaching. it helps keep the intrusive thoughts from being taken too seriously, and helps keep me objective. like "is that me? or goose?" I drew him heehee

I have always had OCD, but it got very severe after I had my son. I had extremely bad health OCD and anxiety and I could barely go to work, shower, be alone with my baby, etc. One day it feels like I just woke up and realized how much of my life and memories with my baby that it had stolen from me and vowed to not let that happen again. It was almost like I was looking at myself from an outside perspective and thought about how ridiculous I sounded/looked. I still struggle sometimes, but not nearly as bad.

I gave my OCD a name. Her name is Shirley and I talk to her like a real person. It has helped me tremendously figure out what thoughts are OCD and what thoughts are me. It also helps me feel less crazy blaming Shirley than blaming myself when I fall into hard OCD episodes.

when I'm struggling to do something or I'm stuck in a compulsion loop, I audibly say "exposure response therapy" and treat it like "yolo." makes it feel less scary and more adventurous. like yes I'm still anxious but it's easier to be brave.

I struggle with the idea that the bad thoughts made me a bad person so my best friend and I came up with the idea to name it. She said “give it a man’s name because you’d never let a man tell you what to do.” So my OCD is Paul and we hate Paul.
