Everyone calls Namsangol a traditional Korean village. It isn't one, and once you know why, it gets far more interesting. Until 1989 this was a Capital Defense Command base, a restricted military zone in the middle of Seoul. When the city got it back it went hunting for hanok that were about to be demolished, found five in five different neighbourhoods, took them apart and rebuilt them here. Every house on this ground was carried in from somewhere else, one beam at a time. The name is older than any of it. Namsangol is where Joseon's broke scholars lived, too poor for proper shoes, wearing wooden clogs even on dry days. People called them 딸깍발이, after the clacking sound. Fifteen metres down, under the top plaza, there's a time capsule. 600 objects sealed in 1994. It opens on 29 November 2394. Now the useful part. This is a working village, and most people shoot the roofs and leave before anything happens. Sept 12-13. Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival, here and at the gugak hall next door. Free. Until Oct 25. Craft workshops, Friday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Bojagi wrapping cloth, mother-of-pearl, hanji paper, Korean sweets, bow making. Listed in English, book three days ahead at hanokmaeul.co.kr. Oct 2 to 23. A concert series inside the Gwanhun-dong house itself, the one Seoul carried here beam by beam. 30,000 won, and the 23rd is free. Until Nov 15. Real traditional weddings in the Min house courtyard. Not demonstrations. Actual weddings, most weekends. Chuseok week. Chuseok is Friday 25 September, holiday Thursday through Saturday. The village runs its biggest free festival of the year around Chuseok, every year. If you're in Seoul that week, be here. And the hands-on side of this place needs no Korean at all: wearing hanbok, folding hanji, writing your name in Hangul. The 2026 dates aren't posted yet, so check hanokmaeul.co.kr first. Free, closed Mondays, open until 9pm through October. Chungmuro Station, lines 3 and 4. Come on a Friday or a weekend. That's when it's actually alive. Comment SEOULFALL and I'll send you my full Seoul autumn map, 29 places with the Naver links. #seoul #koreatravel #namsangol #seoulautumn #hanok
